Corsica is the perfect place for an independent road trip adventure !
Corsica is a land of rugged beauty, begging to be explored on a road trip adventure. The rocky island has kilometer after kilometer of gorgeous coastline, along with mountain peaks reaching nearly 3,000 meters in elevation! While technically part of France, Corsica lies some 170 kilometers from mainland France. Despite this seeming isolation, Corsica has been inhabited for centuries and Corsicans have always prided themselves on their strength and independence, among many other things. With a Corsica road trip through Planet Ride, you’ll have the freedom to explore every corner of this wonderful place! Imagine cruising from one fantastic beach to the next or motoring far into the mountains for a hike. Other possible adventure Corsica activities include snorkeling and scuba diving, or even simply strolling through town or along the beach with some delicious gelato.
The climate in Corsica varies noticeably between the coast, the interior, and the mountains. The majority of the country experiences hot and dry summers and mild, wet winters, with temperatures generally decreasing as you move further inland. At higher altitudes in the mountains, summers are usually short and mild, while winters are very cold but without much precipitation. We would recommend completing your Corsica travel between the middle of spring and middle of fall for the best weather.
Corsican cuisine, while influenced by both French and Italian cooking, retains many unique dishes. The chestnut features prominently in Corsican food, even to this day, and it is the primary ingredient in polenta and many cakes. Corsica also produces its own uniquely flavored gourmet cheeses, charcuterie, olive oil, and wines. Wild game, seafood, and river fish comprise large parts of the Corsican diet, so be sure to try a few of those dishes as you tour Corsica!
Arriving for your Corsica road trip by plane or by boat are the two main options. There are four airports on the island, which are located near the cities of Ajaccio, Bastia, Calvi, and Figari. Getting into the city from the airport can be a little tricky though, as there is not much in the way of public transportation. Taking the ferry from France or Italy is by far the cheaper option, and a popular route is to catch a budget airline flight to Nice and then to take the ferry (without a car) to Corsica. Once on the island, buses are the primary form of public transit, and there is a train system that will take you between the major cities. Traveling by yourself isn’t a problem either, as there isn’t much to worry about regarding crime or safety, but always use common sense!
