Namibia lies along the southwestern edge of Africa and is home to a wealth of striking natural wonders. Its vast expanses make it perfect for those seeking off road adventures, with stretches of both the Kalahari Desert and the Namib Desert occupying swathes of territory. A Namibia safari is easily had with a visit to Etosha National Park or the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Between the numerous other parks and nature reserves, plenty of opportunities exist for Namibia tours. You can explore the Fish River Canyon, where for dozens of kilometers, the mighty Fish River has etched its way through and eroded away the earth. Sometimes, as deep as 550 meters and as wide as 27 kilometers! Other Namibia guided tours abound, and you’ll have no problem getting out into the countryside. Should you need a little city life, spend time in the capital of Windhoek, with its beautiful Christuskirche church and interesting street names, or perhaps, Luderitz, which is a coastal town that still reflects the history of German colonization through its architecture.

The overall climate in Namibia is generally arid with little rain, but two rainy periods do exist. The first lasts from September to November, and is the smaller of the two, while the larger one begins in February and runs through April. Some areas differ significantly in their weather. Along the coast, it is not unusual for dense fog and lower temperatures, while the northern reaches of Namibia experience severe annual flooding. Being below the equator, Namibia’s seasons are reversed from that of Europe and North America. With that in mind, we at Planet Ride would recommend a wintertime or springtime visit, and our Namibia tours generally run between March and December.

Arriving for your Namibia safari, like all travel to central or southern Africa, will take a little more effort and time than usual! However, it’s not overly difficult otherwise. Hosea Kutako International Airport is located about 45 minutes east of Windhoek and is the main entry point for air travel, especially international. Luckily, there are several flights each week directly from Windhoek to Frankfurt, Germany, but otherwise, you might have a lengthy journey. There are also plenty of flights each week to Johannesburg and Cape Town. You could always travel overland by bus or car travel from Namibia’s neighbors. Most EU countries, as well as citizens of Canada and the United States, may enter Namibia visa-free for up to 90 days.

Use common sense and you likely won’t have any problems in Namibia, especially if you stay with your group and don’t visit seedy areas. However, the crime rate is relatively high and armed robberies are reported, including some that involve tourists. Some parts of the country are susceptible to malaria and unsanitary water, so plan accordingly! Aside from these things, you’ll have little to worry about, and will almost certainly have a fantastic trip!
