Map of your Rwanda road trip
Review(s) of our riders who have travelled with Greg

    Day 1 Arrival in Kigali

    180 km

When you arrive at Kigali International Airport, your driver and guide will be there waiting for you to escort you over to the Grande Barriére or the Congolese Border. After clearing customs at the border crossing, you’ll enter in the Democratic Republic of Congo where you guide will give you a personal tour of Goma. You’ll get a glimpse into the town’s history where in January 2002, Mount Nyiragongo erupted sending a stream of lava that was nearly one mile wide and over six feet deep right through the middle of the city right straight into the lake. Today, the town has rebuilt but the lava damaged more than 40% of the original city and has left an interesting mark on the landscape that still lingers today. Goma has bounced back though and you’ll enjoy the sites and sounds before heading to your hotel.

    Day 2 Mountain Gorillas

The day begins early with a delicious local breakfast before heading out to the famous Virunga National Park where you’ll begin your gorilla tracking. Similar to our Rwanda gorilla tours,The local experts will give you a quick briefing on how to skillful track the majestic animal in its native habitat. Today, less than 700 silverback gorillas are alive and seeing them is a truly one of a kind habitat in a truly awesome experience. The journey along the way is also magical as you make your way through Virunga light mountain forest and experience all kinds of other wildlife as well. After a day spent with human’s long-lost cousin, you’ll head back to enjoy the town and perhaps do a little evening adventure.

    Day 3 Mount Nyiracongo Hike

We start early again to embark on a whole day of adventure on the active volcano of Nyiragongo. Nyiragongo towers at nearly 3,500 meters and is one of the most beautiful places in the entire Virunga National Park. You’ll be able to get incredible views of the jungle from above the canopy during the five-hour hike that lead to the rim of the nearly mile-wide crater. Inside is fiery lava lake which is simply mesmerizing to any visitor. Not only that, you’ll hike through the lush forests and the nearby lava fields along your way to the caldera. At night, you’ll have the rare opportunity for an overnight stay at Nyiragongo Crater Cabanas where you can see the truly incredible sight of the volcano at night. Both during the night and day, the volcano is simply incredible.

Day 4 Mount Nyiracongo Descend - Kigali

    180 km

After breakfast, we’ll descend in the early morning cool along the beautiful forest path. We’ll then head down to the hotel to enjoy lunch before transferring you back over the Grande Barriére again to the Rwandan side. Depending on your flight departure schedule, we’ll be able to give a complimentary city Rwanda tour including amazing sizes like the craft market, the Gisozi Memorial, and the Kigali Museum. We also recommend a little last minute souvenir shopping in Kigali which is referred to as Africa’s friendliest capital for its warm and welcoming culture so be sure to book an evening flight back home !
