ESTA USA: What You Need to Know Before Your Road Trip

Preparing a road trip in the United States — whether along Route 66 or through the wide landscapes of the American West — involves more than choosing your motorcycle or planning your itinerary.

Before departure, one administrative step is essential: the ESTA.

Here is what you need to know to travel with peace of mind.

What is the ESTA?

The ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is a mandatory travel authorization for citizens of countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program.

If you are a citizen of France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, or another eligible country, and you are traveling to the United States for:

  • tourism
  • a motorcycle trip
  • a road trip by car
  • a stay of less than 90 days

you must obtain an approved ESTA before departure.

The ESTA is not a visa.
It is a pre-travel authorization required to board your flight to the United States.

When Should You Apply?

It is recommended to apply:

  • at least 72 hours before departure
  • ideally as soon as your trip is confirmed

In most cases, approval is granted quickly.
However, some applications may require additional review. Applying early is always the safest approach.

A successful road trip starts with proper preparation.

How Long Is the ESTA Valid?

An ESTA is valid for:

  • 2 years
  • or until your passport expires (whichever comes first)

During this period, you may travel to the United States multiple times, provided each stay does not exceed 90 consecutive days.

Important: if you renew or replace your passport, you must apply for a new ESTA.

How Do You Apply?

Applications must be completed online via the official U.S. government website:

Be cautious of unofficial third-party websites that charge additional processing fees.

The application process typically takes less than 20 minutes:

  1. Complete the online form
  2. Provide passport and personal information
  3. Answer security-related questions
  4. Pay the fee (approximately 40 USD at the time of writing)
Once approved, the ESTA is electronically linked to your passport.

Do You Need to Print Your ESTA?

In principle, no.

The authorization is digitally associated with your passport, and airlines can verify it electronically.

However, keeping a PDF copy or printed version is recommended as a precaution.

When Is a Visa Required Instead?

A traditional visa is generally required if:

  • you plan to stay more than 90 days
  • you intend to work in the United States
  • you have previously been denied entry
  • you have traveled to certain restricted countries
  • you have a criminal record or specific legal history
In these situations, you should contact the U.S. embassy or consulate to determine the appropriate visa category.

It is essential to answer the ESTA questionnaire accurately. Any false declaration may result in denial of entry.

Why Is This Step Essential for a Road Trip?

A road trip in the USA often involves:

  • motorcycle or car rental
  • international flights
  • hotel bookings
  • travel insurance
Without a valid ESTA, boarding may be denied.

It is a simple formality, but it determines whether your journey can begin.

At Planet Ride, we systematically remind our riders to complete this step early — because a great road trip starts well before the first mile.
