Seek Out Wildlife and Off-road Adventure in Malaysia!

Malaysia is a bit of a paradox, with its wealthy, high-tech, cosmopolitan cities and rugged, remote, and remarkably beautiful countryside. Split into two main landmasses by the South China Sea, Malaysia consists of Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia. While the geography is relatively similar between the two, it is the less populated and jungle-covered eastern half of the country that is prime for a 4x4 adventure Malaysia tour.

Seek Out Wildlife and Off-road Adventure in Malaysia!

Your road trip Malaysia is most likely to begin in Kuala Lumpur when you land at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), which handles the vast majority of international flights to Malaysia. From there, you can hop on another short flight to Kota Kinabalu in the Sabah province or Kuching in the Sarawak province, both on the eastern island. While you might not find much 4×4 adventure in the concrete jungle of Kuala Lumpur, it is definitely worth seeing and exploring! This bustling, shiny metropolis is home to impressive architecture, delicious cuisine, cultural museums, and much more.

While there are undoubtedly remote areas to explore in Peninsular Malaysia, like the tea plantations and rolling hills of the Cameron Highlands or the colonial era hill station of Fraser’s Hill, your best bet for a 4×4 off road Malaysia adventure will be on East Malaysia. This side of the country is home to amazing geographic features and far fewer inhabitants. For example, the peak of Mount Kinabalu towers some 4,095 meters above sea level, and the mountain offers a number of strenuous hiking trails. And, you would be foolish to miss the fantastic Gunung Mulu National Park! Home to unique limestone karst formations, these craggy, jagged rock structures are strangely alluring.

The flora and fauna that inhabit the eastern part of the country will also be a delight to witness along your 4×4 adventure Malaysia. With any luck, you will have the opportunity to see the pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, and orangutans that call this place home. Or, you might visit Gunung Gading National Park to search out the Rafflesia, which is a plant that produces the world’s largest flower! This part of the country is also home to many indigenous peoples, and one can see traditional longhouses and daily life.

No matter where your road trip Malaysia takes you, be sure to taste plenty of the local cuisine. Malaysia’s culture as a whole, including the cuisine, is quite the amalgamation! The food in particular, though, which sits at the crossroads of Chinese, Indian, and native cooking, creates for wonderful flavors, countless regional specialties, and some rather inventive dishes.

With all the country offers, it’s nearly impossible not to be enamored with a road trip Malaysia. From the beautiful geography to the rare plants and animals that inhabit it, or the endless possibilities for adventure – rafting, trekking, scuba diving, etc., or even just the exquisite cuisine, you’re sure to find something you love!

What Planet Ride offers for 4×4 adventures in Malaysia

With one of Planet Ride’s 4×4 off road Malaysia adventures, you’ll gain access to another side of the country that most never get to see! We’ll connect you with one of our expert local guides, like Venky, who has more than a decade of experience leading dozens of expeditions just like this, and is incredibly familiar with the local customs, roads, and attractions.

For all of our tours, we seek out only the best possible partner guides, and each is expert on their vehicles and country. You’ll have an experience unlike any other, as your road trip group sets off to explore destinations far away from the lights and tourist traps of the city. You can also rest assured that your guide will be able to assist with any problems along the way.

An example of one of our Malaysia adventures is an 8-day trek across East Malaysia. This tour is featured year-round and covers 1100 kilometers of intermediate driving difficult. Starting in Kota Kinabalu, you’ll take tough and capable Ford or Toyota 4x4s to visit Kudat on the very tip of the island of Borneo, then venture through remote territory to reach Kota Kinabalu Park. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to relax a bit, wake up to the calls of gibbons and hornbills, and drink delicious hot Sabah tea. Maybe you’d enjoy a river cruise up the Kinabatangan River to view birds and wildlife, like wild orangutans, pygmy elephants, and proboscis monkeys? Continuing on, you’ll venture into the lush, jungle-covered Danum region. Home to diverse and amazing flora and fauna, yet surprisingly void of tourists! Finally, at the end of your road trip Malaysia, you’ll depart from Sandakan Airport for home.
