Day 1 Welcome to San José
You will arrive at Juan Santamaria Airport, near San Jose, at 1150 meters of altitude in the heart of the Central Valley and be Welcomed by your English-speaking guide. Your guide will take you to your hotel and answer any questions about the country and your road trip Costa Rica.

Day 2 San José – Poas – Sarapiqui
89km - 3h30 of riding
After breakfast, we will get our vehicles and begin one of the most thrilling Costa Rica 4×4 tours by heading towards the region of the Poas Volcano National Park, with features at crater that is 1,320 m in diameter, is considered the largest active crater in the world. Next, we will visit the “Laguna de Hule””, which is rumored to be extinct but with its occasional rumblings you can never be too sure! While we enjoy the magnificent view of this lagoon we will have lunch After lunch, we will continue on our way to Sarapiqui. We will go through Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, the ancient meeting Point of the Huetar tribe on the commercial routes between the Mayan and Inca Empires, which has become a special destination for nature lovers. Along the way, we will see plantations where they grow pineapple, palm, banana, yucca, plantain and maize. That afternoon we will set up camp and then get ready to be dazzled by the night sounds of the rainforest.

Day 3 Sarapiqui – Boca Tapada

After breakfast, we continue our 4×4 Costa Rica tour towards “La Tirimbina” reserve where we will take the chocolate tour. Our guide will show us the history and all the secrets of artisanally produced chocolate. After lunch, we will continue our journey to the isolated region of Boca Tapada located in the plains of the Caribbean near the northern border of the country.
It’s a great place for bird watching particularly because is the habitat of the green macaws (Ara Ambigua). That night we will camp near the San Carlos River.

Day 4 Boca Tapada – Fortuna

Today will are bound for the Arenal Volcano region, known for its conical shape and for being one of the must-see sites of Costa Rica. It will be a free day following a “road book” where you will have the advantage to cruise at your own pace and enjoy the optional activities in the region. Some of the options include kayaking on the San Carlos River, visiting the rural community of San Marcos de Curtis where you can see several agricultural projects including pineapple production or if you prefer, going direct to the La Fortuna area to visit other places, like the Arenal Volcano National Park or the hot springs We will meet at sunset in the camp near the Arenal Volcano.

Day 5 La Fortuna – Rincón de la Vieja

Costa Rica 4×4 tours can’t get any better than this! After breakfast, we will close up the camp and drive towards the Arenal hanging bridges. There we will cross a 3.4 km trail where we will go through 8 suspension bridges and see the humid tropical forest from the top of the trees.
We will then continue our route along the northern mountains of Guanacaste that border the Arenal lake, passing through the route between Miravalles and Tenorio volcanoes, to reach the region of Rincon de la Vieja Volcano National Park where we will lodge in a small hacienda that has been converted into an ecolodge.

Day 6 Journey Around Rincón de la Vieja

Our 4×4 Costa Rica tour continues as you spend the day discovering the volcanic activity of Rincón de la Vieja National Park. We will hike 3km of the area known asl “Las Pailas” where, through a path in the dry tropical forest, we can closely observe the volcanic activity and small active craters.
In the afternoon we will visit then cruise over to Santa Maria, to kick back and relax in the natural hot springs as well as to enjoy the the flora and fauna. Tonight we will camp in the national park and have dinner under the moonlight.

Day 7 Rincón de la Vieja – Samara
150km - 3h30 of riding
We are continuing our route along the North Pacific region. Today, you will have free time to enjoy the beaches known for their white sands and surfing spots. Afterwards, we will continue towards to Playa Conchal, where we will have lunch at an isolated beach. We will finish the day by continuing along the road that runs along the ocean to the village of Samara.

Day 8 Samara – Tambor
110km - 4h of riding
Today is all about discovering the Nicoya Peninsula. Depending on the weather, the season of the year and even the tides, the Nicoya Peninsula offers a variety of accesses for 4WD vehicles and incredibly beautiful scenic routes.
After exiting our camp we will continue our road trip Costa Rica through the peninsula, passing by charming towns like Montezuma, Mal País and Santa Teresa. All of these are known for their beaches and waves, as well as for the “pura vida” style of the people who live there.

Day 9 Tambor – Tarcoles (Las Delicias)
115km - 4h of riding
We start today early to take the ferry across the bay to the important town of Puntarenas. Once we get to Puntarenas we will continue down the central Pacific coast to the small village of Tarcoles. Unlike other Costa Rica 4×4 tours, here, we will make a stop on the side of the Tarcoles bridge to see some of the biggest crocodiles in the country measuring between 4 and 5 meters (12-16 ft)! You also have the option to take a walk in the Carara National Park, or take a boat trip for closer look at the crocodiles. Then our expedition continues through the mountains near to Tulin River where we will set up camp on the banks of that river.

Day 10 Tarcoles (Las Delicias) – San José
85km - 2h of riding
You will have a free morning to explore the area and then we will return to the Central Valley alternating between mountain routes and the Costanera Sur route. If there is time, we will make a stop in the Carara National Park or take a boat tour on the Tarcoles River. Then we will return to San Jose and drop off our trusty vehicles that took us so far on our road trip Costa Rica!

Day 11 San José - Airport
We will wrap up our 4×4 Costa Rica tour with private transport to the airport according to your flight time. From here, you can head home or continue your journey across Latin America!
